Low income Holyoke children are plagued by a high rate of overweight and obesity, accompanied by growing rates of diabetes. Pervasive poverty, poor nutrition and lack of physical activity compromise their health. Holyoke Health Center’s “Stepping it Up with the Sullivan School” project will design and test interventions to support and change policies and environment in local elementary schools in order to prevent and reduce childhood obesity among predominately low income Latino children. HHC will work with school leadership, food service and teachers to increase daily physical activity and healthy eating by developing culturally appropriate programming and standardized school policies.
